| | | | | | | Russia ‘turning wave of food crises into tsunami’ by blocking grain exports |
| | The Guardian | 3 min. read |
| | Russia has transformed an existing “life-threatening wave of food crises into a tsunami” by blocking the export of 25m tonnes of grain from Ukraine’s ports. As many as 25 African countries, including many of the least developed, import more than one-third of their wheat from Ukraine and Russia, and 15 of them more than half. More than 40 countries were now facing food inflation of over 15%. |

| | | | | | One of world’s major wheat buyers to trim imports as prices rise | |
| | | | Egypt plans to cut wheat imports by 500,000 tons per year, or about 10%, by eking out more subsidized bread from its grain, Supply Minister Aly El-Moselhy said. The move comes as one of the world’s largest wheat importers struggles with soaring commodity prices as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Egyptian officials are looking to boost their reliance on local wheat production in a bid to reduce the import bill. | |

| | | | | | Heat wave, fires damaging Tunisia’s grain harvest | |
| | | | A heat wave and fires are badly damaging Tunisia‘s grain harvest, leading the farmers union to forecast that output will fall well short of government hopes. Loss of grain production comes as the North African country struggles with food importation costs driven higher by the war in Ukraine. | |

| | | | | | New research shows how disruption in wheat trade can affect food security | |
| | | | Global supply issues related to the pandemic and war in Ukraine have highlighted yet another global vulnerability: food availability. A new University of California, Davis, study sheds light on how trade, and centrality in the global wheat trade network, affect food security. The study shows that many countries depend on trade to fulfill their food needs. Further, the global wheat trade is concentrated in a handful of countries whereby disruption in only a few countries would have global impacts, researchers suggest. | |

| | | | | | Heat is a pollen killer, and that’s a problem for the future of agriculture | |
| | | | Faced with a warmer future, researchers are searching for ways to help pollen beat the heat. They’re uncovering genes that could lead to more heat-tolerant varieties and breeding cultivars that can survive winter and flower before heat strikes. They’re probing pollen’s precise limits and even harvesting pollen at large scales to spray directly onto crops when weather improves. At stake is much of our diet. | |

| | | | | | Minnesota grain dryer experiment will put 'green ammonia' to the test | |
| | | | Can “green ammonia'' be an efficient fuel for drying down grain? A University of Minnesota researcher is working to prove that it can be. about to wrap up three years of work by testing out an ammonia-fueled grain dryer at the West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris, Minn. The test will be fairly small, “just to prove the concept.” But it’s part of a bigger picture. | |

| | | | | | Human cells take in less protein from a plant-based 'meat' | |
| | | Science Daily | 2 min. read | |
| | | Many people have now embraced the plant-based 'meat' movement. Plants high in protein, such as soybeans, are common ingredients, but it's been unclear how much of the nutrient makes it into human cells. Researchers now report that proteins in a model plant-based substitute were not as accessible to cells as those from meat. The team says this knowledge could eventually be used to develop more healthful products. | |

| | | | | | Oat reference genome: Insights into a uniquely healthy cereal crop | |
| | | Science Daily | 4 min. read | |
| | | Cultivated oat (Avena sativa L.) is an old crop thought to have been domesticated over 3,000 years ago, while growing as a weed in wheat and barley fields. Oat has a low carbon footprint, substantial health benefits and the potential to replace animal-based food products. However, lack of genome resources has prevented the application modern methods of plant breeding. An international research team now presents a high-quality reference genome of A. sativa and its most closely related wild relatives. | |

| | | AssociationsNow | 3 min. read | |
| | | Creating an environment that promotes equity at an association means not just creating equal opportunities for people who are already in your loop. It means addressing the circumstances that prevent it. Ensuring that all members have equal opportunities within the profession can be an association’s biggest challenge. The solution: Start before they even become members. | |
