| | | | | | | Alternative flours fuel snack food innovation |
| | Food Business News | 5 min. read |
| | The term “alternative flour” implies a foodstuff other than traditional milled cereal or seed that has been ground into a fine consistency. Sometimes an alternative flour may be made from traditional grains that already have been used, also known as spent in the brewing world. They are upcycled and given a second chance to be consumed. And while all these sources of “flour” are technically plants, flagging legume-, nut- and vegetable-based flours on snack foods appeals to consumers following plant-based diets. |

| | | Mirage News | 3 min. read | |
| | | New research has challenged the traditional concept of sowing Durum wheat towards the end of its sowing window, with trial results indicating that planting earlier could boost yield potential and minimize the impact of Fusarium Crown Rot, which is tipped to be a big risk for northern growers this season. | |

| | | | | | Convergent selection of a WD40 protein that enhances grain yield in maize and rice | |
| | | | During the independent process of cereal evolution, many trait shifts appear to have been under convergent selection to meet the specific needs of humans. Identification of convergently selected genes across cereals could help to clarify the evolution of crop species and to accelerate breeding programs. In the past several decades, researchers have debated whether convergent phenotypic selection in distinct lineages is driven by conserved molecular changes or by diverse molecular pathways. W. Chen et al. examined the genomes of accessions of domestic maize and its wild relative, teosinte, for evolutionary signals of selection. | |

| | | | | | Ryes to the occasion: Exploring how winter rye varieties can suit different climates | |
| | | | Understanding how a crop will grow in various places is key to getting more farmers to grow it. Rye is a cereal grain grown in parts of Europe, and although not a commonly grown crop in other regions, its characteristics make it a valuable option for farmers. Researchers in Estonia studied how rye grows in Estonia and the United Kingdom, testing different varieties of rye with different fertilizers. | |

| | | | | | Ready, set, time to check your pulses | |
| | | Western Producer | 3 min. read | |
| | | Spring conditions vary widely this year in Saskatchewan, Canada, with some early pulse seeding work already starting in the west-central, southwest and south-central regions, while in other areas producers wait impatiently for the last of the snow to retreat and fields to dry. Ken Panchuk, a soils specialist with the Crops and Irrigation Branch at the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, said farmers have likely secured adequate supplies of seeds and inputs, but anyone that hasn’t, needs to make this the top priority. | |

| | | Baking Business | 2 min. read | |
| | | A project involving 20 lines of wheat planted in six different countries will look to identify wheat traits that support a more sustainable use of land by improving soil microbial biodiversity, nitrogen cycling and soil structure. It aims to provide genetic resources and predictive models to breeders and other stakeholders, which could lead to the introduction of beneficial root traits in wheat production. | |
