| | | | | | | How Russia's Ukraine War will make bread unaffordable in some countries |
| | | Many Middle Eastern countries are seriously concerned about the inevitable shortage of grain as Russia and Ukraine together account for 30% of global wheat exports. Russia in not only the world's largest exporter of wheat, with Ukraine in fourth place, but the two countries together also account for 19% of corn exports. The war in Ukraine, if it continues for several weeks more, will also prevent Ukrainians from planting the wheat, while the sanctions imposed by the West will prevent Russia from selling its produce. |

| | | | | | Does pulse-inclusive dog food affect heart health? | |
| | | Pet Food Processing | 4 min. read | |
| | | A new study looks at long-term feeding effects of grain-free dog foods, particularly those with up to 45% pulse inclusion, and the diet’s effect on canine cardiac health. Pawan Singh, a graduate student at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, recently presented her findings, saying, “In recent years, there has been speculation between grain-free or pulse-inclusive diets, specifically those containing field peas and lentils, contributing to the development of nutritionally mediated canine dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM, which is a potentially fatal heart disease.” | |

| | | | A new report from the University of Kentucky shows meat substitutes made from plants doubled in total sales over the past two years, but it didn’t slow the growth in sales of beef and pork. The study, published in the journal Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy, indicates shoppers were more likely to buy less chicken and fish when they bought meat alternatives than they were to cut back on beef or pork. | |

| | | | | | Food protectionism is spreading as Hungary bans grain exports | |
| | | Yahoo! Finance | 3 min. read | |
| | | Governments around the world are taking steps to safeguard domestic food supplies after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine roiled trade and sent prices of key staples soaring. Protectionist measures—which already picked up in recent years as the COVID-19 pandemic sparked worries about local supplies and high prices—could spell more bad news for global food trade. The war in Ukraine has brought crop shipments from much of the crucial Black Sea region to a halt, heightening fears of shortages of grain and sunflower oil. | |
